I am planning and orchestrating my wedding without a "wedding planner", to save money. I am having the wedding and reception at the same place and need to know how to time everything so that it isn't confusing or unorganized to guests. I have enlisted a friend to act as a coordinator the day of the wedding….

if you have hired a DJ (s)he should have a few examples from previous weddings.

here is a timeline from the last wedding i did:

5pm guests arrive
5:30pm ceremony begins
-groom and officiant take their place
-seating of the mothers
-bridal party enters
-bride escorted by father
-welcome words from officant
-service
-lighting of candles
-vows/rings
-pronouncement
-bride and groom exit followed by party and guests

6:20- 6:730 guests arrive at the ceremony location/ cocktail hour
6:20-7:30pm photos for B&G and bridal party
7:30pm bridal party is announced by the DJ
7:35pm Bride and Groom are announced for the 1st time- head straight to the dance floor for 1st dance
7:45 Bride and Groom are seated
-best man and maid of honour toasts
-any misc. toasts from family/guests

7:55pm Bride and Groom get their dinner
8:00pm dinner buffet open to guests
8-8:45 classy music for dining
8:45 start music for dancing
9pm money dance
9:30 cut cake
9:45 bouquet toss
10pm garter toss
dancing
11pm last song.

Hope this helps you start a timeline.
Best wishes :D

I have a 12MP dslr, a GN58 flash gun, a tripod and a reflector. I'm thinking of focusing on wedding photography business. Thank you so much for your ideas!

equipment is not the main consideration.
Skill and experience is.
If you have never done a wedding before then before you jump in you need to work as an assistant for a while so that you do not completely and utterly mess up the couples big day.
Good wedding photography is a skill which can only be learnt with practice so going solo straight is NOT a good idea.

I am running way behind… I think. Still gotta lose the weight, pick the date, locale, everything for the wedding a reception.

Wedding planner sounds nice, but I am not trying to spend a ton of money. Have you had experiences with them? How much did you pay?

Congrats on your engagement. In my opinion, you do not need a wedding planner. I am engaged myself with my very own wedding comming up in oct 07. the best advice i can give you is the very same my sister gave me. Buy a wedding planner book or diary or even google a wedding planner (there are free versions you can download) and deal with first things first like church and reception. most decent places have websites, so you can view without actually having to go out there. Then make a short list of your favourites about 4 - 5 (you can do this from churches and receptions right down to make up artists and bridal gown retailers) and then give them a call and arrange a viewing / appointment. Then once you have found the one you prefer… book it and stop looking…move on to the next thing Eg…. once you have found a church you like, book it and then stop looking at other churches…start looking at the next thing on your checklist. Otherwise… you will overwhelm yourself and confuse yourself a whole lot more. Have confidence in your own choices and decisions and pocket the cash you would have spent on a wedding planner! Besides Planning your wedding is all of the fun!, why give that responsibility to a complete stranger!

I have been getting buisness through word of mouth and emailing bridal shops about exchanging buisness cards but its been a slow month. Is there another effective way to advertise without busting the bank for wedding photography?
Thanks so much!
I have a website that is online and is not a free one, my domain name is my buisness name.
I have done craigslist and others like it.

I know in our town we have bridal fairs at our mall and another at a local hotel. These fairs have booths set up so that businesses can get their names out there. I would start with that. Then word of mouth does wonder. Start some sort of reward program for people who refer you to other people. You may check and see if a local floral shop wants to team up with you and have packages that way. Also check out theknot.com. They are a wedding website that I believe is set up by area of the country.

To choose appetizers for a wedding reception, think of something everyone will enjoy that is easy to eat, like shrimp tail, or an ethnic dish that reflects the family’s background. Create a large appetizer display for guests during the tail hour with helpful advice from a certified wedding planner in this free video on weddings.
